Prepping Breastfeeding Mamas

Last week, many news outlets announced that breastfeeding our littles in public is now officially legal in all 50 states! Woot Woot! As a newborn photographer, I encounter many mamas who choose to breastfeed rather than bottle feed. Its actually been quite common for me this last year or so and I didn't even realize that these protections weren't already in place in every state.

While I do subscribe to the ideology that the best type of baby is a fed baby, no matter how they get their nourishment, it is a question I like to ask my moms before they come in for their sessions. Not because I'm nosey, but because I like to prep them differently than my bottle moms to make sure we get the most out of their newborn session.

Babies that are breastfed typically sleep better around the 7-12 day mark (this isn't an exact science, it just happens to be my personal experience). This time frame has given mom's milk a chance to come in a little better and helps minimize the chance that babe will want to cluster feed. I also like to make sure mom doesn't have any spicy foods 24-48 prior to the session because it can make baby's tummy upset.

For all babes, I ask that moms bring bottles with enough milk for 2 full feedings; but this is especially important for my breastfeeders. If they aren't able to pump enough and are supplementing, it's just nice for them to have the heads up. Doing this helps us accomplishes two things:

  • First, it gives mom a break. She can just sit back, relax, read a book, chit chat with me, take a nap...whatever...She doesn't have to worry about feeding a baby...I've got that covered.

  • Second, it helps the session go more smoothly. Passing the baby back and forth to mom can disrupt their sleep and we want them as sleepy as possible! :)

These are just a few ways I prep my moms to make sure they get the most out of our time together. Have questions? Feel free to leave them in the comments!
